about Diabetes• Characterized by high blood sugar levels caused by defects in insulin secretion, action or both. • Symptoms include excessive thirst, increased urination, non-healing wounds and weight change. • It is the leading cause of blindness, kidney failure and amputations. • Over 550,000 people in North Carolina have diabetes. • North Carolina exceeds the national average for prevalence of diabetes. • Two landmark studies prove that keeping blood sugars near normal minimizes chances of complications such as kidney failure, blindness, poor circulation, heart and nerve damage. The Self-Management Concept High Point Regional Health System is dedicated to providing quality and comprehensive diabetes health care to High Point, Greensboro and Winston-Salem. Diabetes self-management is the process of providing knowledge and skills to assist with day-to-day living. If changes in emotional or physical status occur, needs can be met. The American Diabetes Association established national standards with specific educational criteria. These are the criteria the Diabetes Self Care Management Center educators provide the participants. Participants in a self-management program have been found to have less emergency room visits, hospitalizations and medication costs.
